but the garden you planted remains

in a year of music such as 2007, where i have been on sensory overload since its start - bangin out to remixes, ampin up for a life affirming daft punk show, and searchin for any and every get-ur-groove-on track out there, finding time to slow down and breathe has been sparse. and because of this, i have gotten bored with good music; the kind that takes more than one listen to absorb...something i have taken for granted amidst my world of instant musical hooks and catches.

well, im glad i gave sea wolf's debut lp a second listen after i initially blazed thru it wanting nothing more than the next album i had on que in my itunes. but for some reason i went back and revisited leaves in the river, and boy if its not the biggest, pleasant suprise. at only 9 cuts it wastes no time wandering, just simple melodies, simple instrumentation - the kind that seep in, rapping its roots around you.

epitomizing this motif, is the aptly titled "the garden you planted" - a slow moving, lonely song about far-away-loves (something i can of course relate to), its tribulations, but the reassuring steadfastness in each other that must always be returned to:

-mp3- sea wolf - the garden you planted

i think about you
maybe more than I should
but the smog is getting old
the drugs I’m taking aren’t so good
so will you talk to me
even though you’ve had a late night
because I need a little help
baby, tell me I’ll be alright
cause everything around me’s changed
but the garden that you planted remains

give it a listen, or two for me. let it settle.

another fine tune from the album:

-mp3- sea wolf - you're a wolf

*purchase* (keep checking here, cant find a definitive link for it anywhere yet)

I have a sadder, more pathetic take on the song, which I think adds to its beauty. Yes, it's about far away love, but there's something pathetic about the narrator not letting go and bugging the ex, who has apparently moved on. I have a similar take on "Middle Distance Runner," which has as its hero a man who can't go the distance and instead implores his love to come to him. Maybe it's just the kind of guy I am.

hey raul, thanks for the comment. i really didn't think anyone was reading this...but that's cool.

id have to disagree with you on your take on the song, especially in the line: "seems like im not suited to being in love" obviously indicating the present state of a relationship...but to each is own! it's a damn fine album, and on that, we can both agree.
